A Brief History of the Redwood Pioneers
The Redwood Pioneers began play in 1980 as a result of the Santa Clara Padres needing to find a more suitable location to play. The Team was moved from Santa Clara to Rohnert Park with the promise of a new baseball stadium. While the new stadium was being constructed, the Redwood Pioneers played their home games at Rohnert Park Jr. High for the entire first season. The new Rohnert Park Stadium opened in 1981. After 3 straight subpar season, the Pioneers made it to the playoffs after winning the second half of the North Division and were eventually crowned Cal League Champions. The following season in 1984, Redwood finished with the best record in the league, but were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. After the 1985 season, the team was sold and moved to Palm Springs where they became the Palm Springs Angels.
